RELEASE DETAILS
Clive James On The 80s was a television special broadcast on New Year's Eve 1989. The show comprised year-by-year accounts of significant (or otherwise!) UK and World news stories from 1980 to 1989 - touching upon topics such as politics, sport, music and television - and then closed with the singing of Auld Lang Syne at midnight.
Host Clive James presents these accounts with his customary blend of wit, restrained delivery, observational humour, and out-of-context quoting. He is joined several times by special guest Jerry Hall to assist with the presentation of some coveted "awards", and also by a mystery musical guest towards the end of the show.
Unfortunately the last few seconds of the closing credits are missing (due to something else having been recorded over it on my tape), but I'm certain that nothing of any consequence was missed at this late stage!
The information I've found on the internet about this show state that it was a two hour broadcast, but the show on my old tape was only 1½ hours long.
Being from a 20 year old VHS source the quality of this capture is obviously not perfect. Video is kind of grainy/blurry but discernible, and audio is a bit muffled at times (though in the main seems to have held up better than the video has). Hopefully the show still proves entertaining in spite of this!
